Students can choose from two majors, designed to meet different career and education goals:

  • Clinical Medical Assistant (High School Students Only)
High school students gain direct, real-world experience in clinical settings. This major focuses on patient care skills, medical terminology, vital signs, phlebotomy, and laboratory procedures. Graduates are well-prepared to support physicians and healthcare teams in clinics, hospitals, and other care facilities.

  • Medical Office Specialist (Adults)
Adult learners build strong foundations in the administrative side of healthcare. Coursework includes medical coding, billing, electronic health records, insurance processing, and front-office operations. Medical Assisting Majors

Clinical Medical Assistant

About this Major

This major is only open to high school students. If you are an adult and are interested in medical billing and coding, please visit the Medical Office Specialist major. If you are an adult and interested in a clinical certification, please explore our Flexible Health opportunities for fast-track options.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the healthcare industry is exploding. Employment of healthcare occupations is projected to grow 14 percent from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations, adding about 1.9 million new jobs. Healthcare occupations are projected to add more jobs than any other occupational group.
This high growth rate is driven by development of new technology and treatment modalities, aging of the population, increased healthcare spending, and the need to replace healthcare workers who retire or leave their jobs for other reasons. Growing demand for qualified healthcare workers means excellent employment opportunities for a wide variety of people. Most health support occupations require less than four years of college and many employers offer competitive wage and benefit packages including insurance, tuition reimbursement, and flexible hours to allow for continued education.
The Medical Assisting program is designed to prepare students to pursue a profession in medical assisting, as well as provide a foundation for students interested in pursuing another health-related field. By completing the certification in Clinical Medical Assistant (CMA), students become qualified to work in hospitals, clinics, medical offices, and long term care centers.

A Medical Billing and Coding Specialist will train on how a doctor's office or medical office operates.
