About the Surgical Tech Program

Surgical tech school prepares you for a career as a surgical technologist, an important member of the surgical team. Surgical Technologists are responsible for sterilizing instruments and the operating room environment, preparing the operating room, and making sure the surgical team has everything it needs for a successful operation.

Half of this year-long class will prepare you for a real-world environment with hands-on learning inside a state-of-the-art classroom and simulation lab. Training in the surgical tech program is aligned with the industry and guided by an experienced instructor.

The second half will be spent at clinical sites, where you will be inside hospital operating rooms earning case time necessary to sit for your Surgical Tech certification.

You will learn how to:

  • Maintain a proper sterile field during surgical procedures
  • Provide technical assistance to surgeons, surgical nurses, or anesthesiologists
  • Prepare patient for surgery
  • Monitor and assess operating room conditions, including patient and surgical team needs
  • Observe patients' vital signs and assess physical condition
  • Maintain surgical files and records
  • Arrange medical equipment and assist doctors during surgery

Upon completing this class, you will take the exam to become certified as a Tech in Surgery - TS-C(NCCT). This exam will take place at Francis Tuttle.

Surgical Technology Majors

Surgical Technologist

About this Major

Surgical technologists are allied health professionals who are responsible for various tasks before, during, and after operations. They maintain asepsis – or a clean, sterile environment – during surgery, anticipating the surgeon's needs while remaining attentive to all aspects of the surgical procedure to ensure a safe environment for the patient.

Students in this major will work in a dynamic, collaborative environment where active participation is key. Instructors act as facilitators and experts, providing guidance and resources. While students are responsible for their own learning progress, faculty ensure a robust knowledge base, create an optimal learning environment, and utilize diverse teaching methods to cater to various learning preferences.

Clinical sites will play an important role in the second half of this class. Students will be placed inside hospital operating rooms so they can earn case time that is necessary to secure the Surgical Tech certification.
