About this Major

Cosmetologists must function effectively under stress, communicate in a professional manner, and establish a rapport with clients and colleagues. They must be flexible, creative, artistic, and have good time management skills in a fast-paced environment. Work is usually indoors with a low to moderate noise level. Prolonged standing and working is often necessary to accomplish tasks.

  • Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering Basic Cosmetologist License

This career major's curriculum meets the professional licensure requirements for Oklahoma but does not meet the licensure requirements for all other states.

Entrance Requirements

Students enrolled in the Cosmetology career major must provide copies of their birth certificate and high school transcript, as well as a 2x2-inch full-face face photo newer than one year old and a Cashier's check ($5.00) payable to the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering (OSBCB). A social security number is required on the initial application and is required to obtain a cosmetology license from the OSBCB.

  • Part-time: 25 months (daytime only)

Times

Daytime classes, two sessions at Rockwell only: Monday — Friday

  • 8 a.m. to 10:55 a.m.
  • 12:30 p.m. to 3:25 p.m.
  • Part-time students enroll in either AM or PM session. Full-time adults enroll in both.

Evening classes, Reno or Rockwell, full-time adults only: Monday — Thursday

  • 3:45 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Financial Aid is eligible at Rockwell and Reno campuses; not at Danforth. Full-coverage, black shoes (leather or plastic) are required and must be provide at student expense (approximately $30). Additional uniform costs (up to $100) depend on which campus a student attends and their clothing size. Details will be provided by the instructor after enrollment. *To obtain the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering Basic Cosmetologist license, the student will be responsible for the $5 State Board registration fee. Francis Tuttle will pay the State Board Exam registration fee ($35) and the Oklahoma State Board of Cosmetology and Barbering Basic Cosmetologist License Fee ($25) after the student obtains a passing score on the state licensure tests.
