About this Occupation

Dental Assisting is a rewarding, exciting and growing career that allows individuals to service their communities. The duties of a dental assistant varies by office, but all dental assistants work side by side with the dentists, making them a vital member of the team. Assistants greatly enhance the efficiency of the dentist in the delivery of oral health care and perform a wide range of tasks requiring both interpersonal and technical skills.Individuals best suited for this career have good communication and interpersonal skills, capable of completing physically demanding tasks, able to multi task, and are organized, and detail oriented. Adequate math, reading, and computer skills are vital in being successful in this career. They must have a willingness to adapt to new technologies and methods for performing work. Dental Assistants are occasionally required to lift up to 50 pounds of supplies. There is occasional exposure to communicable diseases, as well as possible exposure to chemicals and radiation. Therefore, use of personal protective equipment is required.

Dental Assisting Program Director and Instructor

Karyn Stafford serves as Program Director and Instructor for Dental Assisting in the Health Sciences Center at the Rockwell Campus. She earned an Associate of Applied Science in Dental Assisting at Rose State College in Midwest City, a Bachelor of Science at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) credential, and Expanded Functions issued by the Oklahoma Board of Dentistry. Karyn has 18 years of dental assisting experience, with 11 of those as Lead Certified Dental Assistant at a local private practice.
