An entrepreneurial example to follow

When it comes to starting and advancing your own business, look no further than Herman Meinders.

He founded American Floral Services at a time when the flower-by-wire service was popular and effective. But times were changing, and Meinders knew he had to keep up.

After several years selling listings and advertisements in floral directories, Meinders started AFS in 1970 from a garage apartment with just $500 in the bank. Through hard work, an intimate knowledge of the business, and the adoption and effective use of emerging technology, AFS became an international leader with revenues in the tens of millions by the time it was sold in 1994.

Meinders grew his business the same way he grew his list of clients as a salesman: by treating people with kindness. He made sure AFS business was done with a personal touch and always looked to make arrangements that were best for all parties involved.

His entrepreneurial spirit and generosity as a philanthropist will continue to motivate and inspire the business men and women of the future. After all, an innovative mind with a focus on helping people is what Design Thinking is all about.
