Automotive Service Technician

About this Major

This major is aligned to Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) standards. Students can attain certification in several ASE entry-level categories through taking this course.

Many tasks performed by Automotive Service Technicians require detail-oriented, hands-on work. For success in this career, technicians must be able to work well independently and as a team member.

Technicians must be able to adapt to new technologies and methods for repairs. In addition, employers expect a clean and neat appearance, a good driving record, and a clean background check that displays professionalism.


ASE Entry-Level Certification in the following:

  • Brakes
  • Electrical & Electronic Systems
  • Engine Performance
  • Engine Repair
  • Heating & Air Conditioning
  • Steering and Suspension
  • Maintenance & Light Repair

Snap-on Certification in the following:

  • Scan Tool Certification
  • Digital Volt Ohm Meter 604 Certification
  • Battery Starting & Charging Systems Certification

*One certification paid by Francis Tuttle. Additional, optional certifications are available at student expense.

  • Full-time: 9 months of instruction
  • Part-time: 18 months of instruction
  • Program length may vary based on progress rate


Two sessions: Monday — Friday 

High school students and part-time adults enroll in either AM or PM session. Full-time adult students enroll in both sessions


  • 7:55 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
  • 12:30 p.m. to 3:35 p.m.


  • 8:10 a.m. 11:15 a.m.
  • 12:30 p.m. to 3:35 p.m.


  • Automotive Brakes (ASE) 135 hours
  • Automotive Engine Repair (ASE) 135 hours
  • Automotive Heating and Air Conditioning (ASE) 135 hours
  • Automotive Steering and Suspension 135 hours
  • Automotive Engine Performance (ASE) 135 hours
  • Automotive Transmission and Transaxle/Manual Drivetrains 135 hours
  • Automotive Electrical/Electronics (ASE) 135 hours
  • Automotive Service Essentials / Workforce Development 135 hours
